RIP Gordon Lightfoot

My music tastes generally lean to toward a very different genre but I've always like Gordon Lightfoot. I got my appreciation for for him from my dad, Gordon Lightfoot was my dad's favorite artist. There will be a heavy rotation of Gordon's music in my playlist today.

I saw this this morning. I like his music. Always put me in a good mood, even if it was a melancholy subject.

He alone immortalized the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. There’s not a November storm In Michigan where this is not played.

I read about his death late last night. I had 4 of his songs on my playlist, and I bought four more this morning.

Having grown up in the Great Lakes State, I always felt that the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald was "Michigan's tragedy." In a way, it surely is.

But I was pretty surprised as an adult, when doing some reading on the theories on the cause of the sinking, that there was barely a Michigander on board (three men were born there but two resided elsewhere, I believe). The crew had members from around the Midwest, and a few Floridians, but was more a crew from Ohio (13 of the 29 men) than from anywhere else.

Apple Music has a GL Essentials playlist of 29 songs. Some of lesser known songs are even better than his big hits.

Late to the memorial service here, and I never paid much attention to his music though I recognized his name and a few of his songs. I read recently a small article online in which one of my favorite musicians said he listened to Gord's Gold on repeat growing up and it's still his favorite record. It was several months ago and I don't remember which artist said it (Danny Carey of Tool, I think, but maybe Dave Grohl? Probably neither, the way memory works) but it was not a guy you would associate with 70's Canadian Folk.

So I started a Gordon Lightfoot radio station on YouTube Music on Saturday morning and headed up to the farm to clear a fence line of some limbs from the recent wind storm. He's been stuck in my head ever since. Sundown captures a vibe that few have replicated on vinyl, in my listening experience.

Inject this directly into my veins please.

I was chatting with my step-mother a couple months ago and she mentioned she still has my dad's old records, mostly Gordon Lightfoot and Roger Whitaker stuff. When she's done snowbirding for the season she's going to box them up and send them to me. My son has no clue what is about to happen to his record player.

Check out the song "The Circle is Small". Sad one about a guy who knows his woman is cheating with a friend.

He and John Prine were great friends. Gordon is in the audience for John's performance at the House of Strombo, one of his last (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5Rkm_dqm7A), about the 5:50 mark. Check that out on YouTube. John acknowledges Gordon in a story about a song called "Far From Me", an old Prine classic, and you can see Gordon singing along in the crowd.

After he died I realized that I knew his name, knew he was popular here but I couldn’t name any of his songs.

I recognized Sundown when I googled his music. But first listen… Holy shit, this song is way better than I remember it being.

How does Danny Hart sit down with balls that big?

I think I was 17 when Locked in the Trunk of a Car hit. I didn’t know any of their songs at the time. They quickly became one of my favourite bands.
