Looking for semi-med advice on my foot. I have a pencil-eraser sized dark spot (bruise?) just below the few layers of skin/fat on the bottom of my foot that's in the middle outer part. It's very faint because it's below the main skin surface. I don't have pain on it running or walking unless I walk barefoot and step directly on a rock or something where the spot is. When I massage the spot, it feel like a mushy pea is under there. I don't remember stepping on a rock or something that would bruise it and it's been there for about a week or two. I was fearful this could be some wierd symptom of a stress fracture but I have no pain on it unless I press directly on it. Any ideas on what this is?

Talk to your GP if you have one, consider a dermatologist and possibly a foot and ankle specialist.

Definitely see your doc or a Dermatologist. When we get cancer screened at work (firefighter) they always check the bottom of our feet.

OK - do you think a general doc or a dermatologist first?

Very silly answer here but could it be a blood blister?
A few years ago, I too had a dark spot on my heel. Being the idiot that I am, I took out my knife and dug away at it later by layer and it turned out to be dried blood from a blood blister. I have no idea how I got it and only noticed it washing my feet in the shower.
Safe to get it checked out anyways.

My guess would be your general doc would send you to the dermatologist ? Call your general and ask.

I've had a bunch of fractures so they are often a sort of ultimate fear of mine, so know when I say this that my own baggage is probably coming into play, but point tenderness is a symptom of a stress fracture. If you don't have pain walking or running that is a good sign.
If it were me I'd make an appt with a type of doc who could do x rays because I'd want to rule out a fracture, but again, this is probably just my baggage.
PM me if you need a rec for a foot specialist in Portland ME.
let us know what it turns out to be please
maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine
If you're injured and need some sympathy, PM me and I'm very happy to write back.

Have you let your feet get cold? I had the same during April/May 2020 Covid lockdown when I was working from my home office in winter which has a concrete floor. I wasn't wearing shoes and so over that period my feet were getting really cold and I got chilblains. That looked and felt just as you mentioned.
Edit to add: As I'm a middle aged male then I followed the correct medical process of jabbing it with a needle to try to get through the skin on the sole and dig it out (refer above), then when that didn't work just ignoring it until either my foot fell off or it went away. After about 9 months then the second occurred, which on balance was probably the option I was hoping for, but wasn't prepared to break protocol and seek advice until 1 or 2 had happened.

Thanks for all the suggestions and concern.... I ended seeing a podiatrist. It turns out this thing was an acute foot bruise. The dark spot is now gone and there is virtually no bump anymore, so it healed on its own. I've never had anything like this before, but glad it's just a bruise. I have no recollection of stepping on anything blunt or sharp either!
glad it healed!
