Kona Pro Female Swim Tempo Analysis

Since we have Kona coming up this weekend, I thought I would do an analysis of the front packs of the female pro field. Hopefully, it will give you some insight into your own training and where you can make improvements and point out some consequences of higher tempo swimming even in rough conditions.

Thanks for watching. Glad you liked it.

It should be interesting to see how Knibb changes the dynamic of the race in the swim. There might be the possibility of developing a more solid front pack with some strong cyclists that shut out the athletes that don't make the front pack. Similar to what's happening in the men's field.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Sam Long just posted a video of him swimming, asking for feedback (probably as a joke). The video quality was pretty poor (no straight on video), but I nonetheless think it’d be cool if you did one critiquing his stroke.

Tim - Bravo, I believe this is one of your best videos ever. You have stated very clearly what should be obvious, i.e. that you can not swim at any higher tempo than you have trained for. And there's no point in just having high turnover for the sake of it, e.g. there's a guy at my main pool who takes around 90 str/min but only swims about 2:40/100scm. He simply can not seem to pull all the way through his stroke. Even with paddles, he just always cuts his stroke way short and he's been swimming this way for about 10 yrs now. Oh well...:)

Was it the video of him breaking a 1:00 for a 100 free?

Glad you liked it. This is the classic advice in triathlon that everyone accepts as gospel and doesn't challenge that you need to have a high tempo stroke, especially in rough open water conditions. As with most things, there are caveats and for triathletes who don't train enough for the distance they are doing high tempo probably isn't very realistic. In my experience, for most triathletes who want to be at the front, the tempo range is probably 1.3 to 1.8. That's what looks like is the most sustainable for the training volume.

There is a pretty big video window in the first post, that should be enough.

That’s the reason. Someone mentioned it before and I couldn’t remember if it was the cookies or something else. Thanks.
