Meanwhile in other triathlon news: It's NCAA regionals this weekend
Quote | Reply
Both the Eastern & Western Regional qualifiers are this weekend. The Eastern race is in Huddleston, VA (https://kineticmultisports.com/races/blue-ridge/) while the Western race is in Springfield, MO (https://runsignup.com/...eartlandTriathlonCup). Different structure this year with no DI, DII & DIII waves. Teams and Individuals from all divisions will be ranked from regular season races and seeded into heats at the Regional Championships. Regionals - Top 7 teams per region, based on regular season rankings, will qualify up to 10 athletes for Heat 1. The top 20 Individuals from Non-Qualified teams will qualify for the Heat 1. All other teams will qualify for Heat 2.

Everyone is positioning themselves for Nationals in Tempe on 11 November.
Nationals

  • Scoring - Teams and athletes will be scored based on finish time, regardless of which heat they’re in.

  • Max score starts with the number of athletes registered. (i.e., reverse XC scoring)

  • Maximum number of athletes per team -7.

  • The Championship Heat 1 will consist of the top 3 Ranked teams from each region, the next 6 highest ranked teams regardless of regional designation, and the top 15 individuals on non-qualified teams. Teams and Individuals will receive call down spots based on their regional rankings.

  • The Championship Heat 2 will consist of the remaining teams with teams receiving call down spots based on their rankings received from Regionals.

FWIW anyone wondering about the format change; it was to align with how the NCAA championship postseason process works for NCAA sports. Tri being a current emerging sport (it will likely get accepted when it comes up for review) when it becomes a full fledge NCAA sponsored sport. NCAA championship is 1 event until each specific division has enough (usually the number is 40 per division) to slot out a specific NCAA D X championship. IE there is then not an D1 champion and D2 champion; there is 1 race full of D1,D2,D3 teams all competing at the same time and there is no distinguishment between the Divisions. That's the NCAA format when it's fully sponsored and there aren't enough programs to divide out the specific divisions. (Which is going to eventually hurt NCAA D3 programs due to the DL/lap out nature of the sport).

So currently it will be an all division race, currently we are running 2 "waves" but when it becomes an actual NCAA sport, there will only be 1 wave allowed. But they may be able to create an larger than normal DL race setup....NCAA tri follows most ITU DL rules; with the exception of the 99 person max field size. Division specific awards and team standings will be allocated once overall standings are completed. So there will be "overall" champion and then specific D1, D2, D3 champion....However when the NCAA takes over officially, that will not be a designation unless your division has it's own race (40 schools in said Division).

So there is still a little bit of figuring out the final NCAA championship format before presenting to the NCAA committee.

Hey thanks to you and Brooks for getting this out there. Any teams with good social media presence or other suggestions on ways to watch?

Queens or LR will likely have the race live on their IG video for the NCAA East.

ASU seems to have live IG feeds from races this year as well.

The East location *may* have poor reception (I don’t have service w/ ATT) as it’s sorta in middle of no where in mountains of Va.

East regionals was a great day of racing once the rain stopped just before the 1st heat. Queens and Denver really got after it in the 2nd heat and there was like 30+ girls all in a line out of the swim. Front group of 9 was caught by T2 with a group of 15+ all together.

Was a really good race day for the East.

Looked like the West was won by ASU, so when the chips were on the table both Queens and ASU stepped up big time.

East Regionals:

Top 3 overall teams:
1. Queens
2. Denver (yes the team in Colorado, but they spread out the D1 teams to try and make each regional even)
3. Wingate

Top 3 D1:
1. Queens
2. Denver
3. ETSU

Top 3 D2:
1. Wingate
2. Lenoir-Rhyne
3. Emmanuel

Top 3 D3:
1. Eastern Mennonite
2. Trine
3. Guilford College

National Qualifiers for Heat 1 (but will actually be raced 2nd at national like at regionals so the top teams know the times to beat):
Top 3 teams *overall* from each region
-Next 6 best teams ranked regardless of region and regardless of division
-15 top individuals not on those team

-All other teams/individuals will qualify for Heat 2.

So the scoring goes:
-all teams are scored overall regardless of your division or heat. They combine the 2 heat times and rank 1-xxx (DNS/DNF/Lap don't count; you must finish to get a score); once overall scores are established they will then give an division ranking after.

Also if you are on IG, follow @wave1performance. JT Rodgers gives great insight on the NCAA movement, he's a former elite athlete as well as former asst coach at Queens. He's a huge supporter of the movement.
