70.3 Pennsylvania - Who's going?
Morning everyone,

Heading out Friday morning for Pennsylvania to do the inaugural 70.3.
Just curious if they're any locals who can give some information.

Water temp? (Online says about 70)
Road conditions on the bike course?
Great places to eat and drink after?

We're camping at KOA Bellafonte, so we are close to everything.

Enjoy your tapers and race safe.
Cheers

Quinner

I’ll be there. If you have Facebook, there’s a group/page that has a bunch of info from locals. Good luck!

I'm trying to keep my eye on the air quality. State College is currently in the thick of it from the Canadian wild fires.

Hope things clear up.

Is anyone in that area? The air quality in Ontario is crap. Hope it’s clear and they don’t cancel.

I'm going. I'm in northwest PA on Lake Erie ... AQI here is sitting around 170-180 and it's hazy. Located about 3.5 hours from State College. SC area is around 160 from what I've seen online. Supposed to start clearing out tomorrow, so hopefully good air by Sunday. Of course, the forecast is also showing a good chance of rain for Sunday, so we'll see how that shakes out ... rain might cool off the lake to keep it wetsuit legal!

Happy racing!

Thanks for the update. It’s not that close to being non wetsuit is it? I see that it’s a reservoir, but google said 70 a few days ago.

I've seen people freaking out on the FB group that temp is in the mid-70s. Who knows?!? RDs usually are able to find a deep, dark, cold spot in lakes to make it wetsuit legal.

I've got the wetsuit ready to go. Not making any last minute plans to buy a swimskin, so I'll just give it a go in my tri kit if it's too warm.

Coming from outside of Detroit. My concern was lightning but now it looks like air quality is a bigger issue. Anyone know what the air quality was for Tremblant prior to them cancelling?

Today I do what others won't, so tomorrow I can do what others can't.

I swam there yesterday, didn't take a temp but the water isn't that warm. It'l be wetsuit legal. Roads for the bike course are all in decent shape, don't forsee any pavement problems.

Watching the air quality issue closely, though.

I just googled the AQI in Mt. Tremblant on Sunday and it was 114 US AQI.

Today at State College it was 124 US AQI. Which is worse.

Our readings are different in Canada, but if these numbers are correct, technically they would have or should have canceled Penn 70.3 if it were held today.

Hopefully the rain knocks this down over the next few days.

I've been watching the weather forecasts online, which often address air quality and nothing definitive is being said about Sunday.
Been nursing a knee injury that's going to make my run split a tossup, so I guess if it's postponed I'll get more rehab time.

I'm four miles from the lake, and looking out my window, edit- there's smoke out there but not what i originally thought.
Sunday is supposed to be better, i think.

Can't see the mountain peak 1/2 mile from my house. I hope some of that is just plain fog, but IDK.

I think the course is a good one, the lake is generally on the calm side and the bike course is scenic, and not a killer. There could be headwind issues on Jacksonville Rd, Rt 64, and Brush Valley dependent on weather, and PSU campus is a nice place to run.

IM race page announcement said AQI was 250-300 at Mont Tremblant before the cancellation ... heard elsewhere it was ~450. State College AQI currently 185 and forecast for tomorrow is ~100 (according to airnow.gov).

That’s promising then. Hate to make the 8 hour drive and not compete. I think we will be ok. Really looking. Forward to it.

Well yeah but organizers always need to plan for the event to happen until it's clear that it won't. Imagine if they didn't set anything up and the weather on Sunday is good.

I’m guessing you are on site. I’m east/NE from State College and MTB’d at lunch easy with no issues and now it seems much better than lunch.

Good luck. I was on the PSU tri team in college and need to get back.
