talk to me about old BMC cross machines

hi all -

have a line on a very cheap ~2008 BMC cross machine cx01. that was their carbon tubed/alu-lugged frame, with campy record mix and an easton fork.

i want it as a holiday bike - will leave it at my summer cottage and do gravel and road training on it, that's about it.

i realize it's old, but it's also low-maintenance - mechanical shifting and cantilever brakes are a plus for a bike that'll sit in a basement 10.5 months a year. i know carbon/alu bonding used to have problems with galvanic corrosion, but i think that was waaay back in the 90s; i'm assuming a 'modern' bmc will be solid.

i also know that 'old carbon' can be a risk, just like old alu. so i guess i'll give it a thorough inspection.

anyone owned one? got any insight into the spec? or thoughts generally on the bike?

I haven’t but my training bike is an old 2008 or maybe 2009 Aluminium Viner Cross Bike. I upgraded the brakes to TRP CX mini Vs and I’m running Campagnolo Centaur 11 Speed with a Miche Graff Sub Compact Chainset with 11-32 and 30/46. It’s bombproof and no complaints.

the one i'm looking at has mini-v's!

i really do like the idea that parts would be simple and cheap. but i also recognize that some of that older spec is getting harder and harder to find. v-brake pads, fine. but old-spec headsets, stems, BBs, etc. . . could be a drag!

They are all still readily available and can’t see that changing any time soon as cheaper bikes still use older standards.

I have the TT02 carbon/aluminum and it has been a fantastic, maintenance free bike. Front derailleur hanger is riveted on and became a little loose, but cable tie fix that. Other than that no problems whatsoever.

I race two canti brake cross bikes, one from 2000, as does my daughter and I have a bunch out as lenders for juniors. It's super easy to find spare parts, even during the pandemic.

That bike will be great for you if the fit is ok.

You can find 8-10 speed stuff all day long for cheap. And it works fine, especially the 10. You can mix Shimano and campy within specific limits.
