Moving to Brussels - seeking for local tri advice
Quote | Reply
Hi ST (and more specifically Belgian users),

I am moving to Brussels, Belgium. I would appreciate advice regarding triathlon training. My main questions are:

- are there some classic bike rides? Good loops without much traffic for the TT bike?

- swim squads? Tri-specific swim groups? And more generally best pools?

- track and field clubs that are happy to welcome triathletes for their track sessions?

Actually any advice that will help with training there will be much appreciated!

Thanks!!

I'm in Gent (51Km) away, and I know some of the clubs and schedules over here, but not as much in Brussels. The way I found them was through Facebook, so maybe that's a good way for you to start.

One cool thing, that can be useful, is the Fietssnelwegen (highways for bikes). Even though is mostly covers the Flanders, you can already get some ideas.

Thanks! I know there is a very good elite field in Belgium, do you know if all these guys train in squads/clubs or on their own?

Regarding the bike highways, I know the one on the Charleroi canal. Are the others similar? That could be interesting for TT riding, but the one I know does not have much portions suited for that.

Lucky man. Belgium is fantastic. As long as you're willing to ride in the rain!

Here is a great thread which lists out a few good swimming options in and around Brussels.

Much depends where in Brussels you'll be living. I lived in Watermael-Boitsfort in southeast of downtown. The road riding was great heading out to Hoeilaart, La Hulpe. You could also ride through the Foret de Soignes (paradise for a cross bike, MTB trails, and trail running) and go to Waterloo (yes, that Waterloo) then onwards to Sint-Genesius-Rode.

Once cyclosportifs start up again, you'll want to hop into those: Ronde van Vlaanderan, etc. To get to ride those epic routes, and then watch the pros race on TV on the same roads the next day, is an incredible experience.

Thanks, this is all very helpful. Rain is not so much an issue as I became an adept of indoor cycling during winter months. And for some reason I don’t really mind rain for running.

I will be based in Uccle near the Wolvendael park. I have identified a track in Forest and the Longchamps swimming pool. If someone is reading this and uses those facilities, I’d be very happy to read about their specs/opening hours/dos-donts.

Thanks again for all the inputs!

I have a related question.
If we consider a situation of moving from US to EU (Brussels for example) and planning a top tier tri bike purchase. Most probably it's cheaper to buy it in the US.

Are there issues expected with maintaining North American brands like Felt, Specialized, Cervelo, QR in Belgian LBSes?
Will there be better support for Canyon because it's a European brand?
