Latest DIY paint project

Lots of sanding (not shown)

Electric blue metallic and black metallic. Will have a yellow and red transition between main colours.

Using Duplicolour auto paint system this time. So easy to spray thanks to lower pressures, and it dries super fast. If I was better organized I could have had all 4 colours go on in a day.

Are you going for a retro Look colour-scheme?!

Just out of interest, how did you strip the frame?

Yup, hours and hours of sanding. Mostly 400 and 800 grit wet/dry paper.

Nope, quite different. IIRC, they tended to be single colour frames with accents.

Iā€™m just doing what comes into my head, already changed it twice mid-paint job. Once itā€™s done Iā€™ll let you guys decide what it reminds you of (if anything.)

Good work, and l wish you luck in this project.

But, when you rebuild your bike, you truly gotta fix your saddle position.

Painting complete and 2 coats of clear. Originally I was going to do a red and yellow stripe thing, but I couldnā€™t find a metallic yellow at the local Canadian tire. So I went for triangles instead.

Will let the clear coat cure for a few days before building up again. I need to pick up new cables and such anyway, wonā€™t have time to do that before next week.

Looks nice. Don't envy the sanding---a little hand-sanding is one thing.... At least when I paint a car, I can use powered sanders for 99% of the job.

Yeah, the sanding was a LOT of work. Watched both seasons of Agent Carter before it was done.

Yup. I always hated the colour. It was a warranty replacement for my lemond maillot jaune. Gold to purple metallic fade, that one was beautiful!!

Another question for you since this is not a racing bike (l assume) where every gram counts, is there any reason that you sanded all the original paint off?

Couldn't you just have roughed up the original paint and then put your paint over it (after you sanded it fairly smooth) vs removing all of the original paint?

Could have, but then you risk paint compatibility issues and bubbling.

This will be my race bike once road / crit racing resumes, every gram counts within a budget. Built up with zipp 303 tubulars race wheels itā€™s around 16.5 lbs, light enough for my bulk.

Got impatient to build, so built it up except bar tape and cables.

Weighed in at 15.8 lbs with pedals and bottle cages. just the cables and bar tape to be added, those are probably another half pound or so. Not bad for an old bike.

You could have saved yourself quite a bit of time with Soysolv. I have used it on composites a bunch, and it does not harm the composite. Used lots for marine paint stripping from glass hulls.
