Can anyone help me solve these problems? Thanks!

2) Every hour, on the hour, a train leaves Tallahassee for Jacksonville, while another train leaves Jacksonville for Tallahassee. The trip between the two cities takes exactly two hours. How many of the trains going in the opposite direction will a Tallahassee train to Jacksonville meet?

Are you asking us to do your math homework for you, or so you can win a bet, or so you can show off?

I will never answer this because the original poster said these were math problems...that's an insult to real maths.

these are just puzzles.

I am just trying to keep my sister in law "in check". I have 8/10 of her questions answered and she will not help me with rest.

And to Francois ... Sorry about the unintended insult. I am glad that I did not use the a word (algebra). ;)

Greg,

Thanks! I'll take a look at your results and figure out how you got there. I will also give you "full credit" for the answers.

Regards,

Mike

Just one.

If you count the train that arrives just as you depart, and the train that departs just as you arrive.

At the moment your train leaves, there is a train arriving, a train halfway there, and a train leaving your destination. That's three right there. You pass the first one immediately, the second one in 1/2 hour, and the third one in an hour. At that point, another train leave the destination; you pass that one (the fourth) in 1/2 hour. Finally, you pass the train leaving as you arrive (#5).

As Francois indicated, the puzzle is poorly worded.

Here's another: you get on a ski lift at the very beginning of the lift, and get off at the very end of the other end. There are 97 chairs on the lift. How many chairs do you pass on the way up?

If it's a old style lift where the chairs don't come off the cable (and bunch at either end), and the gap between then is sufficient for your chair to pass the one behind it on the cable after you've sat down (ditto, in reverse, at the other end) and pass doesn't mean overtake ...

96.

YOu can't count the arrival and departure passes as the trains don;t pass. Everyone knows that the yards at Jax and Talahassee have their arrival and departure tracks on different ends of the yard.
