Marathon after Half IM
Hi,

First time in a long time for me in this forum and getting back to tri's after a long break, so forgive me if this is redundant as I have seen a few threads related to this but not quite exact.

I need someone to tell me if I'm crazy or if this is doable. My moronic logic tells me its doable.

My A race is a Half IM. That is largely what I'll train for this year. I kind of want to run a particular marathon which is only a week later.

My poor logic says the HIM is longer overall and that my fitness should be able to carry me through the marathon the following week. I typically recover well.

I am not trying to run the marathon fast, will be happy just to finish.

As long as you realize you're out to finish and not putting unrealistic expectations out there, no reason you couldn't finish them. Wifey just did the Disney Dopey Challenge, 4 days of racing...5km, 10km, half mary, then full marathon. 3 parks of 8 hours a day non-stop park exploring on her feet. Only sitting down for lunch or on a ride. Long standing lines...incredible and crazy. 2-3 AM wake up calls each morning for the races with bedtime around 9 PM. Not something I want to attempt. So sure, go for it and have fun if you're just out to finish.

If you recover well, then you can do it, but I guarantee the tail end of the marathon won't be pretty. I recover pretty fast after a HIM, and am back to usual training by Wednesday-Thursday after a Sunday race. If this sounds like you, then you can certainly do the marathon. What is the reason to race this particular marathon? The only time I've done a marathon and not raced as fast possible was when I was pacing my wife (twice).

I guess my perspective is coming from truly racing a marathon - I feel that takes more out of you and I feel worse afterwards than after an Ironman. I know that sounds kind of crazy, but my legs are absolutely wrecked for 4-5 days post marathon - backwards down stairs and all. For an IM my legs don't feel nearly as bad during that same time period.

You can finish that marathon but you won't be racing. You'll blow up sooner that you'd think like half way into the marathon and the finish will be a fight for survival.

I'm doing Cairns IM, and then Gold Coast full marathon (one month) - should be enough.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Doable but make sure to manage expectations as far as the marathon; since the half IM is your A race, you'll still be feeling it during the marathon. If your goal for the marathon is just to finish and have some fun, you'll be fine.

Yeah, If you're not "racing" the marathon, have at it. Take a few days rest before and bust out some Zone 2 pace the entire way. No big deal.

My 43rd birthday was 3 days after I raced a 70.3. I decided I wanted to run my age in miles on my BD. I settled for 31 miles for a 50k so yes, it's possible. My pace was about 2:1/2 minutes slower per mile though but I was okay with that. Sounds like you are good just finishing so get your head right, adjust your pace and you will be fine.
