Things to do in Tempe before/after IM AZ
My wife and I will be in Tempe from the Friday before Ironman AZ to the Wednesday after. We're looking for some ideas of things to do in the area. I've found some good looking hiking trails and the zoo looks like fun. We like doing outdoorsy things. We'll obviously need to try to keep things low-key before the race.

We're staying at a hotel right near the Arizona Mills mall.

Any restaurants you guys would recommend?

NCAA triathlon championships (women's) will be at Tempe Beach park on the 16th, as well as USAT Age Group Draft Legal Nationals.

The Blue Man Group will be performing at ASU at the Gammage the 15th-17th.

A friend and I are still trying to figure out what's to do in the area as well, but so far this is what we've got, other than some horseback riding expedition that AirBnb suggested.

If your up for little less than two hour drive than I’d head up to Sedona and you can make you way to flagstaff/oak creek canyon. It’s beautiful up there. Wickenburg is a cool western town as well.

If you are looking for closer. I really like cave creek. Old western town with shops/restaurants. Most people head to old town SCOTTSDALE. Bunch of art restutants and shops.

In Tempe you can hike A mountain and camelback isn’t that far away. I mean there’s malls but IMO not a ton in Tempe.

I would recommend the Phoenix zoo. Very close to the race site. Your kids would like it.

I did the race a couple years ago and had my teenage daughter with me. We took a train to the Grand Canyon, spent about 4 or so hours there then took the train back. We had a great time. We also did a Pink Jeep tour in Sedona where they take you off-road for a nice bumpy ride. We had to drive a few hours to Sedona but it was well worth it.

Legoland/aquarium is underwhelming for the price of admission but being that your daughter is three she might very well like it. The zoo is a nice one, that isn't huge but is a nice day to recover the day after the race and walk around and stretch those legs out for a few hours......

Music Instrument Museum in Scottsdale is really good. There is a children's museum in Phoenix that is okay for 3 year olds. Hiking in South Mountain is very convenient to your location although less interesting vs the Superstitions, yet much less crowded than Camelback. You could head down to Tucson and see the Pima Air and Space Museum. The Grand Canyon can be done in a day trip along with a drive through Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon on the way up, but it's a lot of driving. Makutu's Island was fun for the kids when they were little - some place to send the bored family while you do a training ride.

Go here: http://sugarbowlscottsdale.com/sugar-bowl-menu/

It’s a pink building on Scottsdale Road that’s been in business since 1958 (even older than me ;-) I remember enjoying ice cream there as a small child during my first trip to the Southwest, Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, Meteor Crater, etc.

Does she like trains? My son will be 3 in February, and our favorite place is the McCormick Stillman Railroad Park (https://www.therailroadpark.com/). Extensive playground, and a huge building of model trains, which are both free. There is a working miniature train, and carousel, and museum, which cost 3 dollars per ride. Nearby is the Oddysea aquarium, Pangea Dinosaurs, and Medieval Times. All are a bit expensive to me, but my son loves going to them all! This is about 15 minutes north of the race site, along the 101.

Went there to many times on business, best excursions I did was Camelback as mentioned above and PIMA down in Tucson. Not a long drive if you have a car and very cool if there are any nerds or airplane-heads in your family :-)

They even have an SR-71 and several Russian jets on display. https://pimaair.org/

A lot of good recommendations above, but I think your daughter is the perfect age for the railroad park in Scottsdale. And for mellow hiking, Brown's Ranch is great, too.

BTW, not to scare you too much, but the area near Arizona Mills is not the best. If you can't find something affordable closer to the race venue, I'd try to find an affordable place to stay in Scottsdale.

Uptown Jungle at 2061 N Arizona Ave, Chandler, AZ 85225. I know it's nice outside, but this place is awesome.

As has been said, the Phoenix Zoo is great too, especially in November with the weather. Our 2 & 3yr olds love it.

Honestly, Tempe Town Lake is a great place too. Plenty of things to see, you can rent bikes with kids seats attached and ride around the lake.
