My 5 year old swam 100m and I'm not taking that
Quote | Reply
Shit to the other forum because no one that saw it would have immediately recognised it as "swimming"

So seriously, how long till she can pull the pieces together to form recognisable strokes

She can kick well on her back

She can kick well with a noodle for breaststroke and crawl with a float

She can do breastroke arm with crawl legs but can't link them up

How long for it all to come together?

My 9yo swims all year around, started when he was 7 on a local club team. His team is setup in different levels that go from kids that are just out of diapers all the way to Nationals.

The really young ones that are just learning practice all 4 strokes and meet up to 4x per week for 30 minutes per session.

Depending on individual skill it will take a season or two to get the strokes down but they learn quickly.

During swim team on the summers, I remember always being short on 15-18 boys. Every now and then we would pull someones younger brother (5 or 6) who just happened to be at the sat meets (if the other team didnt have a 15-18 boys team). By the time the younger brothers were 6 they could swim recognizably (able to swim 50s very slowly, and held on the wall at 25 to catch their breath (and it was 50-50 if they DQd and grabbed the lane lines). This is when the kids would get the biggest cheers at the meets.

By 7 or 8 it wasnt a cute event where everyone cheered wildly just for the kid to finish.

So you are pretty close.

There are plenty of grown men on the tri forum who can’t swim recognizable strokes either so it might take longer than one would expect.

Depends how much you’re willing to risk making her hate swimming...

If you quit feeding her til she learns I’d say a day

She will probably be able to do it tomorrow. (I'm teaching swimming at a camp right now - little ones get it pretty fast sometimes)

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine

That is how most triathletes swim ;-)

At 5, mine couldn't swim.
At 6, she was comfortable in the pool
At 7, she was a fish

So I'd say in a week or two. Next summer at the absolute max

It is directly correlated to the amount of time you take her to the pool. Pretty sure there are 5 yr olds out there that swim fine.

Here is a 3 yr old well on her way
