Speed work

Marathon training is usually a one and done approach for me. Pick a target time and hit the workout numbers.
How much value can I gain from focussing on shorter distances and for how long until that starts to make a difference for longer distances?
Is shaving 10 minutes off a marathon more achievable in long distance training or do I need to hit the low 16s for 10k first?
I’m usually too tired for speedwork in a marathon build.

I’m definitely not an expert, but I do try and train for 70.3’s and a marathon simultaneously. I find that when I do hard mile repeats at 5k or 10k pace, that makes the marathon paced run seem so much easier

Yes you absolutely need to hit low 16’s for 10km. Get to work on that, and don’t come back here until you’re at least under 20.
