Agreed, I visited on a clear day and have some great pictures from the bridge.

Should add, pulling from the patriotism thread, the National Mall. If you go at the right time, the choices of stuff to do is pretty great. Air and Space, and National Gallery, the various monuments, Capitol building tour, National Archives, etc, etc, etc.

Even just walking around, the architecture is pretty impressive.

I posted about the mall in that thread. And as far as straight up tourist attractions I have to say it is right at the top. There are so many really cool and moving monuments and memorials within a couple miles. We also spent a day at the natural history museum which was very cool. But the National Gallery of Art is just amazing, it needs multiple days to take in. If you count the Smithsonian Museums as part of the mall I can't think of anywhere more impressive, and even if you don't it is pretty moving.

As for natural wonders there is one at the very top for me. You will never forget your first view of Crater Lake. The only thing I have seen anywhere close to as awesome was a late afternoon sun on the Going to the Sun road in Glacier NP.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

This sounds stupid, but...

Nebraska Capitol Building

Boyfriend and I were driving across the US, trying to do see/do something "fun" each day in the midst of 8-12 hrs/day of driving. The interwebs showed that as being cool to see and honestly, I was blown away. I know little about architecture, but it was very cool.

The Penis Of The Plains!

It is a pretty impressive building!!

"Did you miss out on Mount Rushmore, Sears Tower, Hoover Dam? "

Mt. Rushmore and Sears Tower were north of where I was driving (I was trying to get to San Diego). I did also miss the Hoover Dam, though I've been out that way twice. The timing just didn't work out.

Re: Sears Tower - Not sure how impressed I'd be by it as I live not too far from NYC. I'd been in the Empire State Building, and Twin Towers by that point. Since then I've been in World Trade Center One, the Stratosphere, and had dinner in the CN Tower (by far my favorite skyscraper experience).

Re: Rushmore - Its on the bucket list, but I've heard this one makes the Most Disappointing list as it is much smaller than people expect.

Getting a little more specific, I'd say The Smithsonian, but the mall, in general, certainly adds to the experience.

Yes, one of the few "city" places I would like to get back to, was a kid when I went the first time.

Here are some Asian and Oceanic ones:
Snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef
Angkor Wat - Cambodia
Ha Long Bay - Vietnam (only if you can go off season, otherwise it is covered with tourists!)
Annapurna Circuit - Nepal (spectacular scenery)
Lake Khovsgol - Mongolia (spectacular both summer and winter)
Beijing - Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, Summer Palace and the Great Wall of China

Echoing The Vatican, and I’m not Catholic. And the Colosseum.

Adding The Leaning Tower of Pisa. I lost my breath when I walked through the gates, looked up and wondered how in the hell it’s still standing.

And a day at The Palace at Versailles explains why there was a French Revolution.

My daughter started crying when she walked into La Sagrada Familia. Really something.

I'm surprised Grand Teton National Park has not been mentioned. It is incredible. We went there a couple of years ago on vacation and it was peaceful and beautiful.

I would also add Granada, Spain. It is absolutely incredible. Such a great city and the Alhambra is majestic.

I stuck with all manmade, otherwise my list would have been too long. Love me some nature. Absolutely love the Tetons. I enjoy that park more than Yellowstone. I only seem to go to both of them on the same trip, so they always get linked in my mind.

Actually, the entirity of Utah is amazing. Zion, Arches, Bryce, Cedar Breaks, White Rim, Porcupine Rim.
I'll be back in that general vicinity with my mountain bike again this summer.

of those I've only been to Bryce but I agree - so cool. I also like the parts of the San Rafael Swell that have petroglyphs. It feels so wonderfully ancient.
