My mother was instrumental in creating the first database ( well heavily cross indexed and searchable card catalog) of fingerprints for forensic use. Idea was her boss (former Scotland yard), but she created the system. It was a small scale since it was Windsor Ontario with a regional population of 150k.
It was significant enough that I have photos of her with J Edgar Hoover who came up to learn what she did and bring it back to the USA.
I guess I owe my American friends an apology now.

My great great grandfather deserted his British Navy crew to shack up with a hooker in Portland. Does that count?

Am I an illegal?

Anyone else have family with notable achievements or otherwise famous?

Somewhat famous, cycling classics specialist Sep Vanmarcke (Education First) is my cousin (our fathers are brothers).

My 5th great-grandfather on my fathers side of the family was also in the British Navy. Originally from Nottinghamshire, he departed from Dorchester England as Captain of the maintop and ship carpenter in a man-of-war. It arrived in Shelburne on the south shore of Nova Scotia Canada in 1784.

I have seen reports that he was stationed on the ship while his buddies were onshore past their curfew. As he didn't want to be responsible for their punishment, he deserted, swimming ashore with his kit on a moonlit night and kept hiding until the ship departed. No mention of a hooker but a year later he married a 20-year old lass from Chatham MA.

One of my relatives from the 1800's was hired by the US Government to lead one of the major forced relocation marches of what we call The Trail of Tears today//

There is a story on my dads side of the family that is similar. Apparently one of our direct ancestors was the guide for Brigham Young, and was the one that led them their promised land. As the lore goes, they say there is a statue of him at Brigham Young University, or some such place. This thread has reminded me that only my Aunt is left on that side, and probably has all those details. I better call soon I think too, she must be in her 90's by now...And they are all Mormons on that side too, but apparently the guide was not..

My dads cousin, William Brohn is a Tony Award winner (orchestration for Ragtime). Most recently did the orchestration for Wicked.

I am somehow related to Colt Mccoy's wife Rachel Glandorf. Glandorf is my moms maiden name. I didn't get invited to the wedding but did get some pictures of the event sent to me.

Perhaps the closest was my grandmother's cousin, Earl 'One Lung' McClung. He was an original member of the Easy Company, 2nd Bn, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Div. He made through WWII from the pre-D Day night jump and all the big battles through to the end.

My uncle tells me stories of Earl, just as laid back of a guy as there ever was, but could be fierce when needed. I never got to meet him personally. When I retired from the Marine Corps in Sept 2013, I learned he was living at the Veterans Home in Pueblo, CO. Unfortunately he passed away before I visit.

My maternal grandfather was one of the postal inspectors who was investigating Jimmy Hoffa.
My maternal great grandfather rode with General Robert E Lee in the Civil War-funny about that as I am now interracially married(haha).
My paternal grandfather was a recruited wood worker from Denmark that developed, by hand, some of the first automobiles in Detroit.
My paternal great great great grandfather was a Viking explorer who landed on Nova Scotia.

And then there is me......What a disappointment I must be.

My mom is into genealogy and has been for many many many years. Some evidence but not proof positive of Eric the Red.
Solid evidence of Francis Cooke (of the mayflower), Mom is a member of Mayflower Society actually has traced 2 ancestors back to it now. Pretty solid proof of some Lady named Mary Boleyn being a many great grandmother, of course to get to her, you have to go through one of her children, father unknown, interestingly about 6 months before the baby was born she was thrown out of the castle and soon after her sister married the guy she was rumored to be sleeping with.. I can't remember his name Henry or something.. Oh well i wont lose my head over it either way... My poor Greatmany times Aunt Anne.

My mother did the same Mayflower society thing . I guess I'm a decedent of Stephen Hopkins the only passenger to have previously visited the Americas (Jamestown) and got himself shipwrecked along the way. Why in hell he would come back after that I have no idea.

OK then, as the son of a devoted genealogist, I hav e to say

- anyone claiming ancestry provenance back beyond 1700s has to provide documentation, or it's all familial hearsay.

My Great (x3) Grandfather, John Milton, was the governor of Florida during the Civil War. He committed suicide by pistol shortly before the Confederacy surrendered at Appomattox. His father (IIRC, also John Milton) was a Secretary of State from Georgia following the American Revolution and was considered for the nomination for the first US president. John Milton's son, Jeffrey, went on to become a Texas Ranger and was credited with killing 34 men. Jeff Milton's son went on to become a senator from Florida around the turn of the 20th century.

There is actually a book called “The History of the Lincoln Family” or something like that. I don’t have the ISBN number handy but we have a copy at my dads house.
