Maybe I missed it or it dropped off the bottom of the page, but the first ever picture of a black hole was taken recently. There are two pieces fascinating about this:
1 - it looked pretty much exactly like they predicted
2 - it has validated (I'm guessing) I way of drastically increasing the power of telescopes.
The gist on #2 is that Dr. Kate Bouman developed (or enhanced or utilized....I'm not certain) a way to use all of the major large telescopes on earth to piece together images in a way that would effectively be equivalent to having a single telescope the size of the Earth.
