I have a tender hard spot on ball of foot about inch below middle toe. It’s tender to push and it’s hard. Any causes for this? I have been running on the treadmill more the last few weeks so maybe I running on balls of feet a little more or sweating more so more friction?

I'm actually thinking its not a callus since the skin is smooth. But its hard underneath the skin. It hurts to walk barefoot with it and feels a little better with shoes. Any idea how to get rid of it? It doesn't look like a plantar wart.

Yep, Morton Neuroma.

I am have some custom inserts from a Pedorthist, have been dealing with it for a like 4 months, just starting to run again after winter, so hoping that the inserts do the trick.

I've also found that a wider forefoot in your shoe will help. Narrow shoes tend to compress the metatarsals and inflame the nerves going through between the mid foot.

And it can be a very long process to cure, so to catch it quick is smart.

I've switched to more cushy socks and slapped on my new Kinvera's the last few days. It's slowly getting better it seems. It still hurts but not as bad. I had over 350 miles on my Kinveras when I first had this hard spot on the ball of my foot so I'm wondering if I just need to swap out sooner. I weigh 194lbs.

I have Morton's Neuroma and I'm not aware of it presenting with palpable symptoms (i.e., a change in foot appearance or texture). There are several foot specialists on this board so I hope they chime in, but Morton's Neuroma classically presents with the feeling of your sock being bunched up under your foot, specifically between the third and fourth metatarsals. How big would you say this lumb is? After my diagnosis, I started running in Altras, which have a very wide toe box. I'm very happy with them.

See a podiatrist. I had something similar, turned out to be a clogged sweat gland.

As others have suggested, see a podiatrist.

In my personal experience I had something similar, small spot with a callus that was tender to the touch, and uncomfortable to walk on. Went to a podiatrist and after shaving away the callus it ended up being a plantar wart. You could soak your foot in warm water, buy a scapal from a pharmacy, and shave away the callus and see if a wart is hiding under there.

I've had tiny pieces of glass embed in the ball of my foot 3 different times over the years. They callused over quickly but were sensitive if you applied pressure directly to the intruder. By the third time I was finally quick to identify and remedy the problem. The first time it took me months to figure it out including an unproductive trip to the podiatrist. .
