Can't make this stuff up.

The law enforcement team showed up at Massad’s house around 4:40 a.m. They identified themselves and pounded on his door, battering it with a ram and shooting it with a shotgun before realizing the door opened outward, according to a complaint affidavit in the case.

Okay... residences.

Lots of folks in the south who don't have to deal with snow.

I have always been under the impression that it had nothing to do with snow, but rather where the hinges were. If the door opens out, the hinges would be "outside" and the pins could be easily drifted out of the hinges, negating any locking mechanisms. Have I been thinking about this the wrong way my entire life?

No, and the door even opens toward the external wall of the house. Sometimes have to go out through the garage to shovel in front of the door to be able to easily open it. Piss poor design.

Why not just arrest the guy at the next city council meeting?

Florida doors open out, at least the older houses, so that the door sweeps critters off the porch before you step out.

Plus you don’t want an inward swinging door in a hurricane.

I dunno, I've lived in Florida since '99 and I've never encountered a door that opens outward.

Thanks to this thread, I'm sure I'll pay attention to doors on private homes from here on out!

You can get tamper resistant hinge barrels for this scenario quite easily. Most commercial spaces need outward swinging doors for emergency egress. In our old downtown, most of those are regular outward swinging doors or French doors.

It's not super common for houses to have outward swinging doors, but, there's no rule why you can't.

I'm so stupid, I've NEVER thought about doors swinging inwards or outwards. Not once in all of my 48 years. What have I been doing with my life?
