Unfortunately it's not being stopped in it's tracks. They are going to continue to blow money on Environmental studies and continue to build and implement the section from Merced to Bakersfield. Then I'm sure once it starts running that prized route, and can't make a cent taxpayers will get to subsidize it. Why?
Gavin doesn't want to give $3.5 Billion back to Trump. Hey I thought it was the taxpayers money!

“I’m not interested in making the same old mistakes,” Newsom said. Apparently he's finding new mistakes.

Of course that is how the news reports it. We have horrible journalism it is so hard to find facts. But here are a few things the media ignores.

- Gavin doesn't want to stop this money pit because- "The federal government provided $3.5 million to California for the high-speed rail system, including $2.6 billion in stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) in 2010. The federal government required a segment of the rail system, located in the Central Valley, to be constructed by December 2022. In November 2018, state auditor Elaine Howle said, “If the Authority does not complete the construction by the federal government's December 2022 deadline, it may need to repay $3.5 billion."
- 3.5 billion is a lot of money to give back.

- To keep this boondoggle going they are raiding Calif. Cap and trade funds (this money could be better used) to the tune of $2.403 billion so far. Funny no word from the uppity environmentalist.

- Hey! environmentalist! Pouring millions of tons of cement INCREASES CO2- Here's are some great construction pictures..

"The cement industry is one of two largest producers of carbon dioxide (CO2), creating up to 5% of worldwide man-made emissions of this gas, of which 50% is from the chemical process and 40% from burning fuel.[1] The carbon dioxide CO2 produced for the manufacture of structural concrete (using ~14% cement) is estimated at 410 kg/m3 (~180 kg/tonne @ density of 2.3 g/cm3) (reduced to 290 kg/m3 with 30% fly ash replacement of cement).[3] The CO2 emission from the concrete production is directly proportional to the cement content used in the concrete mix; 900 kg of CO2 are emitted for the fabrication of every ton of cement, accounting for 88% of the emissions associated with the average concrete mix.[4][5] Cement manufacture contributes greenhouse gases both directly through the production of carbon dioxide when calcium carbonate is thermally decomposed, producing lime and carbon dioxide,[6] and also through the use of energy, particularly from the combustion of fossil fuels."

- This is a real kicker completely ignored. There is already an Amtrak train that goes back and forth 6 times a day ($27 ticket) for mere 1300 passengers Bakersfield to Merced.

There are so many other things about this massive waste of money our shitty media ignores...

With this level of traffic, the project will start paying for itself in about 100,000 years (+/- a few years).

Its a Field of Dreams scenario: they are hoping that if they build it, people will come.

Though you have to consider this data:

Passenger rail by passenger-kilometres per capita

#1: Swithzerland: 2430.9 km/yr
#2 Japan 1,995 km/yr
#3 Denmark 1,329 km/yr
#4 France 1,298 km/yr
#5 Austria 1,245 km/yr

#11 Germany 959 km/yr

Near the bottom of the List: USA 80 km/yr

The USA is not likely to become a 'train nation' anytime soon.
