Bands to strengthen swimming muscles
Before kids getting to the pool wasn't much of an issue. Now that I have two young kids it's a lot harder - go figure! Currently, I'm able to get in two swims most weeks. I am wondering what sort of bands I could use a couple of times each week to work a bit on the swim muscles to help out a little bit. Would this make any sort of difference? I do have some weights as well, if it would make sense to do something like rows or rear flys as well.

I have some of the stretchcordz bands with paddle handles. They’re not expensive and can’t hurt. I’m a MOP swimmer, at best, so I can’t comment on effectiveness.

We use those stretch cordz one with tower 26. Building from 3x30 in offseason up to 3x100 for race season. We do these prior to each of the 4 weekly workouts. I definitely think they help build strength. If you did 3x100 every morning that would prob make a big difference.

For the group of athletes that I coach + masters (2 times a week on deck master's coaching program), once a week I add in band work to make them stronger in the water and work on their cadence which is a great thing for open water swimming when the water isn't perfect, etc. This is the 1st year I've added that in for dedicated band training and I'm seeing good results from it. It's not a lot about ~300yds per set (roughly 2500-3k yardage sets, depending on their interval in a 1 hour session).

I just think it really forces you to get aggressive with catching water and "getting on top" of the water.
