Actually unlike you Trump ball washers the left leaning people on here will call a spade a spade and say that this is stupid.

Now, back to building the wall...

Why is taxing texts stupid but taxing income is ok?

Why is taxing texts stupid but taxing gasoline is ok?

Why is taxing texts stupid but taxing death is ok?

Why is taxing texts stupid but taxing soda is ok?

Why is taxing texts stupid but....

Tax whatever you like. I don't care.

It's what it's paying for that is stupid.

This idea that a specific tax is paying for a specific budget item is absurd.

The idea isn't absurd. The thought that in practice that's how it will actually work is absurd.

I should have put "what it's paying for" in quotes previously.

While I agree it is not a good idea. I did read an article that explains things better. CA was taxing land lines. People moved their conversations to a different format. So now they are looking to tax the new format. Not much different than what will happen with Cars and the gas tax. If cars stop using gas, then they will have to tax cars differently. Conversations still are using much of the existing infrastructure. That still has to be maintained. So the money has to come from somewhere.

Glad I don't live there. :)

we're somehow going to have to make due without your smiling face!

two things come to mind: 1. assuming you're texting in an android or iOS device, california will continue to work day and night to make your texting more pleasurable and efficient (and, hopefully, safer). you're welcome. and, 2. i can't find a california state senator or assemblyman who's supporting taxing text messages. when you find that person, report back. i'm sure his or her constituents would like to know.

Now they can get back to the mileage tax.

https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/...nsiders-mileage-tax/

The theory is this. Those folks who have gone to electric and/or hybrid vehicles aren't paying the 52+/gal cent gas tax to fix the roads. Therefore, a mileage tax would ensure everyone pays their fair share. I love the way the dems think sometimes. Oh, how would they track your mileage you ask? Watch the video. The politician says that can easily be done via tracking your cell phone. Sound familiar?

Oh, how would they track your mileage you ask?

No tracking necessary. You self report registering each year. Since a smog check is required every two years prior to registering, a third party confirms. So it alternates each year between an honor system and verification.

Another options would be to certify service stations, etc., to verify. Since it would be a once-a-year thing per vehicle, and the certification process would take less than a minute, I'd guess competition would drive most to offer the service for free. Kind of like how a lot of tire shops will plug a puncture for free in an effort to build a loyal customer base.

I should run for office here.

LOL! Okay, okay, I confess. You caught me. One last try though........mandating solar panels on all new construction to save the environment/energy? I was still in CA when the solar panel thing started to blow up. People were selling back their energy and suddenly the energy companies realized this was going to hurt their bottom line. So....energy prices went up and the sell back program stopped. Does this count?

sure it counts! i'm not sure where you're getting the "solar panel thing starting to blow up." it's still very real. and it's not mandated on new construction. and my utility, southern california edison, is still buying back electricity from homeowners. but other than that, i'm with you 100 percent!

we'll see what happens. right now, california is way ahead of other states on alternative energy, both in the amount we generate and in the people in the industry we employ. i'm converting my own house to solar this year. did you see 60 minutes last night? i hope we do something more constructive about plastic, and you can make fun of us about that.

I did see that. It was very well done and it did in fact make me think about plastic. I've always poo pooed the plastic thing but geez, that was crazy. - On an interesting note. I flew down to CA two weeks ago for my old neighbors kid's Christmas program. We went out to eat and I noted we were given plastic straws. So I asked. They said, few restaurants in CA were following the 'no straw' rule. I found that quite interesting. So it is a rule/law with no teeth to it or???

as well as i can tell, it's not a state law. it's a city-by-city ordinance. what i will say is that i almost always order an iced tea when i go out. and i specifically say, no straw. i also say, no sweetener, no spoon. and then i get my tea. with a straw, sweetener and spoon. and then i remind the server. so it's going to take a little time.

"State regulators have been ginning up a scheme to charge a fee for text messaging on mobile phones to help support programs that make phone service accessible to the poor. The wireless industry and business groups have been working to defeat the proposal, now scheduled for a vote next month by the California Public Utilities Commission.

“It’s a dumb idea,” said Jim Wunderman, president of the Bay Area Council business-sponsored advocacy group. “This is how conversations take place in this day and age, and it’s almost like saying there should be a tax on the conversations we have.”

It’s unclear how much individual consumers would be asked to pay their wireless carrier for texting services under the proposal. But it likely would be billed as a flat surcharge per customer — one of those irksome fees at the bottom of your wireless bill — not a fee per text."
