Let me start out by saying I LOVE the DD. Easily the hardest event I have ever done, and the most beautiful all at the same time.

But this year I can't make it due to a family commitment. Are there any similar organized rides out there? A one day epic bike ride? Something as challenging/epic/bucket-worthy?

Preferably something in the Northeast or Mid Atlantic?

Civil War Century
Jeremiah Bishop's Alpine Loop Gran Fondo

I've only done the Civil War Century as well as Diabolical Double. The Diabolical Double is as tough and epic as it gets. I have heard that Jeremiah Bishop's is tough as well.

You could also bike out & back on Skyline Drive. I believe the Reston Area Tri club has a two-day event Tour de Skyline.
