UV Air Purifiers - Hokey or not?
Does anyone know anything about UV Air Purifiers? I have a friend in the HVAC industry who recommended one to me to rid my condo of the occasional smell of cigarette smoke which comes from an adjoining unit. The device he reccomened would be installed in the return ductwork so it would potentially 'treat' all of the air moving through the system.

Would I be better off with a Hepa type filter?

Thanks.

UV by itself will do nothing to help the smoke. UV purifies by killing organisms in the air but does nothing to absorb odors like smoke.

A HEPA unit is probably your best bet. One with a 2 stage filtration process. The first being a coarse/carbon filter to remove odors and large particles and the second being a HEPA filter to remove allergans, pollen and other smaller stuff.

How often are you going to climb into your ducts to clean it? UV works great in killing stuff, not sure about smoke odors though. The problem is that the bulb quickly gets covered in dust which means it is no longer effective.
