I have a program on a jump drive. When i try to run it on my desktop the program wont run. I suspect it is because the jump drive gets designated as the F drive on the desktop and the D drive on the original computer (laptop). Can I reanme the jumpdrive on the desktop. Their is already a drive named F so the renaming would have top be temporary.

What OS are you using? I can give you better instructions if I know what OS you are running.

Is it a program (ie an excecutable) or is it just a file (ie Word Document)? Have you tried transferring it to your hard drive and running it from there? How is your jumpdrive being designated as the F: drive when you already have one?

My first suggestion is to copy it to your hard drive and then try to run it.

You have a little bit of a problem. If the problem was "installed" on your jump drive while on your laptop, then its registry information will be on the laptop - this tells Windows what drives to associate it with, where the relevant system and other files are, etc.

However, if its a pretty self-contained executable program, you might be able to get away with running it on the desktop as well. If it is in fact the drive designation that is the problem, then you can go to (I hope you're using XP) Control Panel>Performance>Administrative Tools>Computer Management and move your drive letters around, which is a little painful, but it certainly works. That way the drive letters will line up for the jump drive.

But as I said, if it needs registry information you're screwed. And take it from somebody who knows, the registry file is fragile and if it gets screwed up, its game over and time for a nice drive wipe and Windows reinstall.

Good Luck.
