Southern Illinois Riding
Doing Wisconsin and Louisville this year and right in between getting sent down to Southern Il for work for about 10 days so will be looking to get some riding in. Just checking to see if anyone is familiar with the area and can recommend some routes or areas. Ill actually be staying in Cape Girardeau MO. Shawnee National Forest seems close. Thanks in advance

Carbondale is a good base of operations, but there's a lot of good riding in that whole area:

Thanks man. Thinking the roads are pretty rural and the riding should be pretty good anywhere.

I recommend against riding in rural areas you're not familiar with, drivers in trucks are not very friendly to cyclists. Trainer is best, especially if you're only going to be there for a few days, not worth the risks.

No problem. The Carbondale to Metropolis route is all kinds of awesome, but I recommend flipping around in Vienna.

There are a lot of good route variations around Giant City and Cobden.

Some great riding around there. Should be some good group rides out of Carbondale. Call into bike surgeon for the down low. Williams Hill is the biggest climb in Illinois. Should be well worth it.

That area of MO also has some super rides. Road races in Missouri used to be the toughest in the nation. All crits now.

If you have a gravel/cross bike you're comfortable on - or knobby tires for the road bike, check out Tunnel Hill State Park. 55 mile crushed limestone rail trail. I had to spend a lot of time in Carbondale on a client in 2011-2012 and rode and ran there daily.
