Have decided gear would be easier to pack and fit in a side load duffel as opposed to other luggage or ye old military duffel, and easier to haul. The one in the running is a 100 L pelican, however there are no detachable straps if I want to carry like a pack. Based upon reviews, construction and it may just be the right size, it is still the only one on the list. Criteria:
Needs to withstand airline luggage handling, no thin material to be punctured by contents or outside beatings.
Water resistant at minimum.
Removable backpack straps preferred. Wheels not required.
Pockets not that necessary since I'll use the packable organizer bags.
Needs to hold: collapsible carbon poles, tripod, sleeping bag, thermarest, 2 pr trail running shoes, puffy coat, running clothes, cold gear, rain gear, swim fins and goggles, etc, probably some other slip on shoes, some food. The rest I'm picking up there or will have in carry on. Price range I'd say about $200 or less. It seems you get what you pay for judging by fabric and construction.
Been searching and I've also come across "gear" bags for sports and hunting and whatnot, so maybe there is something out there unconventional that meets the needs. I won't be backpacking so leaving that pack at home, I'm sure the airlines would chew all the straps up. However packing daily minimal clothing as I expect to be washing gear a lot for two weeks. I would like to be able to use this for other trips, even just the long weekend get away. Ideas?
