Does this make sense? Fork rake question...
Is it possible (likely) to have a fork with 50mm rake? I have a carbon fork, with as best I can measure 50mm of rake. It isn't the easiest thing in the world to measure with the fork installed, but that is my best measurement.

Sidebar: Why don't most fork mfgs. even tell you the rake of the fork. Isn't this important?

Do I understand correctly, that if I were to put a 40mm rake fork on this same bike that I would actually INCREASE trail which actually INCREASES stability and that would be a good thing for someone riding in the aerobars?

Thoughts?

Most forks I have seen indicate rack on the steer tube. It is measured from the center of the axel (in the fork) to the center line of the steer tube - kinda hard to measure properly...especialy with the small variation you will get from one fork to another (within 5mm)

Thanks. Yeah it is difficult to measure accurately. I tried again with a better method and now it does look close to 43mm.

The rest of my original question still stands though. Trail?

I know there's one manufacturer that does a 50mm rake carbon fork. I'll have to dig around a bit.

It is possible, most carbon forks are in the 38 to 45mm range but some are made to 50mm (Reynolds Ouzo Pro is available with 50mm of rake). Most carbon fork mfgs will place a label on the steerer tube above the fork crown (you would need to remove the fork from the bike-maybe less work than trying to measure rake with the fork installed) that will include such info.

A 40mm rake would increase trail with all other variables the same (between fork models there will be some variation in height leading to very small changes in steering angle.

One reason a bike designer might choose a 50mm rake is to minimize toe overlap on a bike with a shorter top tube (tt < 52 cm with 700C wheels). My point is to suggest that if you do install a fork with less rake be aware that more attention may need to be paid to toe overlap/ low speed turn situations.

You got there before I did. Yup, the Ouzo Pro comes in 40, 43, 45, and 50mm rake.
