Austin area races and training partner
I am relatively new to the Austin area (Georgetown) and I am looking to set up my season calendar. I will be doing base work from now until the end of March, and want my races to be between April and October. I want to focus on sprints and olys with sprints being my known strength- I might also consider a late season 1/2IM. Any opinions on the best races without having to travel to far? Any info on the 2006 calendar?

Also, I am interested in a training partner(s)- real or "virtual". I am a FOPer for sprints and MOPer for olys. My short-term goals are to maintain consistency, gain fitness, and get to race weight. My sport limiter is running and my general limiter is endurance. My aspiration for this season is to place top 3 (okay, more realistically top 5) in my age group (30-34) for my as of yet undetermined A race. Please PM me if interested.

Thanks.

There are a ton of great races around ATX some of my favorites are...

Marble Falls (sprint

Burnet Tir Hard (sprint)

Capital Of Texas Tri (sprint, Oly)

Iron Star in Conroe (1/2 in Oct)

There are many others but these are my favorties.

Lots of places and people to train with in the area. Check out the Austin Tri Cyclist Sat ride. The ATC ride leaves from there.

Thanks. I'll check into these. Any 2006 info on them yet? Otherwise I will plan off of the 2005 dates.

I really haven't look but they are generally around the same time. The Cap Tex race is always on Memorial weekend (Monday). I it a great venue even though it is a bit crowded.

The best on-line calendar will be at trifind.com.

The best regional in print calendar will be in the March issue of Runner Triathlete News. You can pick up copies at Austin Tri-Cyclist or RunTex. http://www.runnertriathletenews.com is the website.

The first triathlon of the season is usually in March and there are several duathlons in the February/March timeframe. The best group ride is the Austin Tri Cyclist saturday ride. AUstin Cycling association does several weekend rides thoughout the year. An Austin Triathletes meeting is also a good place to meet folks, but they generally are down south...quite a ways from you unless you work downtown. Also check the Runtex triathlon forum for more posts/information.

Good luck...good to have you in central Texas.

Another good race is the San Antonio "splash" tri at sea world (sprint).
I would be interested in training with you. I just started doing this last season, and we share similar goals for next season.

ATX Trihead, do you know if ATC is still doing their Saturday rides in the winter? I just recently found out about that ride, but figured it was on hold until it was warmer out.

I am doing Cap. of Tex Olympic memorial day, and Ironstar in Conroe as well and no, the web sites are not updated for 2006 yet. I checked this weekend.

Cap. TX is Memorial day weekend, and Dilloman out by lake travis was on Sept. 11th, 2005. I want to come to Austin for this sprint as well with my brother and some friends. Buffalo Springs 70.3 isn't too terrible a drive from Austin and is a very well put on and attended HIM in Lubbock. There are lots of great sprints in the Houston area, 2 1/2 hours away if you want some info on those?

Good luck, you'll love Austin. I lived there for seven of the most enjoyable years of my life.

The ride is still on every Saturday at 8:30. The pace depends on who shows up, but things generally gear down a bit in the winter.

Yeah, it was quite small last weekend, but the free breakfast tacos at the end are worth the ride.

My race schedule last year included the following:

The Rookie Tri in early May (mini-sprint)

CapTex Oly on Memorial Day

Jack's Generic Triathlon in September (longer mini-sprint)

Iron Star 1/2 IM in October.

I'll probably be doing many of the same again this year with IMLP thrown in for July.

Thanks for the good input! Assuming I don't get deployed to OIF, I am thinking about:

Austin Cactus Challenge on 4/9 (warm-up B Oly)

Capital of Texas on 5/29 (A Oly)

Marble Falls on about 7/16 (B Sprint)

Dilloman on about 9/10 (A Sprint)

Iron Star on about 10/17 (1/2IM - looking to survive)

Any thoughts or comments? I appreciate the advice.

that looks good. I did the Iron Star this year and it was awesome. Very nice course. Except the water could have been deeper - it was very shallow in areas.

I'm looking to make the trek to Lubbock for the Buffalo Springs 70.3 for '06

You have to add Jack's Generic to your list. It's usually Aug/Sep timeframe and always a winner for fun. Water guns, frisbees and beach balls!

Agreed about Jack's Generic. It's a great venue and a lot of fun. They hand you a squirt gun as you head out on the run course that you can use on pretty much anybody. Makes for light-hearted racing.

yep, Jack puts on a good race! (a bunch of good ones, actually!) Still doing Benbrook? I think that's a nice early season race.

Yes we are, May 7 is Benbrook. We now have a women's only race on the same course as well in October.

Thanks,

Jack
