Very nicely, thank you your concern. The top 10 states most dependent on government include Mississippi, West Virginia, Arkansas, Rhode Island, New Mexico, and Wyoming and Vermont.
I lived in Newport, RI a long time ago. Thought the place (and the state) was fantastic. I could maybe see living in Wyoming and Vermont, but that's about it. It'll probably be Texas or Arizona for us when it comes to permanent retirement.
Hawaii -- where I still own a home -- is just too damn expensive even if you shop on base. We'll sell the house to fund an even better retirement, looks like to me. But Michigan? Uh-uh.
And forget California (where I've lived), too. Taxes (including on our military pensions). Virginia (also lived there)? Taxes (including military pensions). Florida? No thanks. Too much Florida Man down that way. Tennessee's intriguing, and my mother's family on her mother's side is from down there (Clarksville area). I'm holding out for Idaho or Montana (I could build a great tar paper shack ;-), but I can't convince the spousal unit that those are viable places for retirement. She hates Washington and Oregon, too, before you ask.
