Alright. I have been doing Olympic Distance tri's for a few years now, nothing very competitive, and I've always been middle to front/middle of the pack. The run has always stood out as the sorriest part of my race. I've been using the training plans by Gale Bernhardt as the basis for all my training and I've been pleased with my results. But in an attempt to remedy my run weakness, I've spent part of this winter digesting Jack Daniel's running book. The overall feeling I've gotten is that I need to really get to a point where I am running every day, with 2 breakthrough run workouts each week. I'm not opposed to this, but I'm unsure how this runner's approach factors into a multisport plan. I'm starting to work up my plan for my very first Half Ironman this coming summer, and I'm conflicted:
Gale's Half Iron plan calls for an average of 3 run workouts, 3 swim workouts, 3 bike workouts, and 1 strength workout each week. Two of those would be higher intensity breakthough workouts later in the season when base has been established. But I feel like Daniels would have me running daily on top of my weekly bike, swim, and strength workouts.
So assuming I have the time and dedication for whatever will get me the fastest:
Will 3 run workouts weekly produce good results as long as the breakthrough day is truly quality?
OR should I run 6 days a week and have 2 run breakthroughs, on top of my bike breakthrough?
OR should I add a few more run workouts, but just make them easy endurance miles? (or is this just junk mileage if I already have a decent endurance base?)
I would love to get a coach, but I simply can't afford one, and I welcome any input anybody would be willing to give with the meager details I've provided.
