Does anyone have any experience traveling with road/tri bike in case on domestic trains in Italy? I will be traveling from Rome to Venice and am wondering if I will be able to take my bike in its travel case? Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance. No direct experience, but many trains in Europe have a small luggage section that is used to store suitcases and such. Some trains even have a bicycle storage area, but those are primarily designed for bikes that people have ridden to the station. At worst, you could leave the bike case in the section at the end of the train car, but then I also suggest you look for seating where you can keep an eye on the case.

i bike toured the adriatic coast (croatia/montenegro) with my wife, a few years ago, and we traveled partly by train across northern italy. we didn't have cases, mind you.
experience was mostly OK, but on a holiday weekend it was chaos. arrived on the train to find that the bike hanging area was already crammed full of peoples' luggage. the conductors just sort of shrugged, so we stood with our bikes between carriages.
check the type of train you're on - some of the regional ones are just big busses that you can throw any old thing into, whereas i think some of the high-speed trains only take a very limited number of bikes. you also sometimes have the option of actually sort of 'checking' it into a cargo car, especially if the bike's in a case. and watch out for peak times!

I travelled through Italy by train a couple of summers ago and while I didn't have a Bike Case I did have all my and my family's luggage. The train system is pretty good and convenient but I would make sure to keep an eye on your stuff.
At some of the larger train stations there were a fair amount of gypsies willing to help us with our luggage ;)

Thanks for the info everyone. A quick update- a friend of mine is in Italy now and confirmed with 2 domestic stations there is no problem bringing your bike in a travel case on the train and it would be treated as luggage.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
