Heart Rate Training Zones Question
After lurking these boards for a while, I am now an offical member. Thanks for being such a great resource for training information. Speaking of training, that leads me to my question . . .

I know that zone 1 is for recovery, zone 2 for endurance, and zone 5 is for speed work. I am training for IM CDA this year, and so I will be spending a whole lot of time in zones 1 and 2. What is the purpose of zones 3 and 4?

When training for an IM, is there ever a good reason to go any higher than zone 2 (except for the occasional speed work in zone 5)? Will my training ever take me to zones 3 and 4?

Peter Reid does all of his work at 80% Max HR or below----with the exception of one workout a week in each sport at high intensity (80-95% MHR). Be patient---if you are training for halfs or fulls you need to build your aerobic engine. Think specificity and repeatabilty. Ask yourself if the workout you are doing will translate to helping you in your race.
