Can this frame be saved?

Okay, this is NOT my frame, and sorry, I don't have any pics... Anyway, went to a friend of the sherpa yesterday after the local small 5K (Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run in Seattle -- probably 10,000 people there...), and helped her set up her trainer. I noticed a bike leaning against the wall and asked about it... "One of the doctors loaned it to me. It's old, something like 1990. I never rode it, and it's just sitting there."

It's a very small QR Kilo, 650 wheels, Syntace aero set-up, Ultegra single pivot brakes... I ask if I can take a closer look. Grafton cranks. 8-speed rear end with a corn-cob cluster. Nice. I'm about to throw a leg over it (not that it would be anywhere NEAR my size) and notice something not quite right.

At the seatpost binder, I see a crack. When I look closer, I see that the crack extends down from the top of the seat tube parallel to the cut for the seat binder, then angles down and connects with the bottom of the cut. It's completely separated.

Is there something that can be done to salvage this frame? Other than that, the bike is very nice. Not up-to-date spec, but that's just parts...

Nope. the frame is toast. Only thing that can be done is salvage what is worth salvaging (old parts are great for winter / commuting bikes).

Does this frame have braze on seat clamp? Never say die with out looking - the frame can be saved more often than not - especially if it is the seat clamp area that is damaged.

I'd have to look again -- I think it was just the tube extending up. It's aluminum (Slowman might be able to dig up the actual alloy).

That was my first reaction too, but I thought I'd put it out there for some more frame-builder-savvy types.

I re-read your post, depending on the size of the break it still might be OK. I was thinking that the crack extended further down the frame.

I assume that the frame has a separate seat collar? if so, just save the broken section of tube and use it as a shim. Depending on how much frame extends above the top tube, you may be able to cut off the broken section and have a new slot cut (carefully).

Make sure the seatpost extends below the level of the top tube.

I tend to agree with the assesment that it is ruined.

Now, anything can be fixed... But it is a case of economy here. The cost to repaired it well and correctly likely would approach the cost to replace it. And even then you'll still have a used, formerly broken, frame that may fail elsewhere sometime in the future.

Stuff wears out. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow... but stuff wears out.

I'd have to take another look at it. Thanks for the input.

Very true -- the matter of economy. Something that weighs into the equation very heavily.
