Kansan, former KU (minor in Biology) and current "KSU-nut" here. There aren't many times that I'm ashamed of Kansas, but this is one of those times.

John Stuart Mill said, "Like other tyrannies, the tyranny of the majority was at first, and is still vulgarly, held in dread, chiefly as operating through the acts of the public authorities. But reflecting persons perceived that when society is itself the tyrant — society collectively over the separate individuals who compose it — its means of tyrannizing are not restricted to the acts which it may do by the hands of its political functionaries. Society can and does execute its own mandates; and if it issues wrong mandates instead of right, or any mandates at all in things with which it ought not to meddle, it practices a social tyranny more formidable than many kinds of political oppression, since, though not usually upheld by such extreme penalties, it leaves fewer means of escape, penetrating much more deeply into the details of life, and enslaving the soul itself. Protection, therefore, against the tyranny of the magistrate is not enough; there needs protection also against the tyranny of the prevailing opinion and feeling, against the tendency of society to impose, by other means than civil penalties, its own ideas and practices as rules of conduct on those who dissent from them; to fetter the development and, if possible, prevent the formation of any individuality not in harmony with its ways, and compel all characters to fashion themselves upon the model of its own. There is a limit to the legitimate interference of collective opinion with individual independence; and to find that limit, and maintain it against encroachment, is as indispensable to a good condition of human affairs as protection against political despotism." — On Liberty, The Library of Liberal Arts edition, p.7.

I think the FSM should sue to get their theory into the Kasnsas curriculum. To exclude it but include a Judeo-Chrisitian ID theory would be a 1st Amendment violation, wouldn't it?

Yes, but His Noodly Appendage forgives them. I, on the otherhand, do not.

Tom Frank's book "What's the Matter with Kansas" talks at great length about the compact between the wealthy, pro-business, pro-choice, pro-evolution, screw-the-poor Republicans in Mission Hills and the much poorer religious right in the rest of the state. They used the religious right as foot soldiers in elections, harnessing their righteous indignation to win and lower taxes and services to these same religious right. It's backfired a little, with the virulent anti-abortion and anti-evolution backlash that's followed by empowering this constituency and stoking their anger. But it's partially their payback for getting them to vote against their economic interest.

In any case, the book uses Kansas as a microcosm for the rest of the country in terms of right-wing strategy and wedge issues.

"Don't you see the rest of the country looks upon New York like we're left-wing, communist, Jewish, homosexual pornographers? I think of us that way sometimes and I live here." - Alvy Singer, "Annie Hall"

I forgot about that book. I bought it for my father-in-law and kind of hoped he'd pass it along when done. He might have burned it though. He lives in, gasp, Olathe. (I heard a reporter call it O-lath instead of O-lathe-uh)

Like I said, about half my school was from Mission Hills. I was blissfully unaware of politics and religious meddling back then though. Just noticed that some kids had brand new beamers while I felt dang happy to drive a $300 beat up Datsun.

I do know that our science classes were second to none. Our school had half the National Merit Finalists and I got my college scholarship primarily because of my high ACT scores in science. That, and I was just an overall great kid... So, naturally, I took my high science scores and got a journalism degree before learning that writers earn less than pizza delivery drivers. Not sure how I got such high scores, being clueless and all.

I didn't think they had triathletes in Manhattan! I lived there for four years while my wife attended veterinary school and never met one. I was an RCPD police officer and spent a year walking the ville ... man, I really liked living in Manhattan. Nice to see someone from 'home' on Slowtwitch.

Don't worry jendz. KU should be fine. Decent, upstanding people there. It's those nuts at KSU we should be worried about.

;-)

Looking forward to tipoff tonight? I don't get the games out here and there's no way I'm paying to listen on the radio.

Yes, there are a handful of triathletes in Manhattan (KS). Blue Hills Adventures is based here and has a triathlon and adventure race here, which is part of their larger series. Kansas has about 10 triathlons, and KCMO adds some more. As you know, this part of Kansas is AWESOME for training, provided you have access to the KSU pool. I love the fact that I can leave my garage on a 5-hour ride and never have to worry about road-raging drivers, or have to stop or put a foot down, unless I want to do so. Seasonal open-water swimming, run trails, and endless dirt-roads are available. Yeah, the weather's always a challenge and we have no mountains, but I'll take it.

What we really need here is a Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. I'm hoping that since Kansas was the inspiration for the recent spread of that religion, we'll soon get a church here.

I actually miss the little apple. My wife and I live in Fort Collins Colorado, which is a nice small city, with embarrassingly good cycling-running-trails-and-MOUNTAINS. The tri scene, and outdoors scene in general, is huge here ... hundreds of triathletes, literally a dozen or so indoor pools. At least two tris within driving distance every weekend in-season.
