Awesome race (if your not going to be top 20). Excellent everything! BUT, and I mean this. Every Mother F'er German (this isn't a political thing, its a local thing) paces thier buddies on the run on the canal. Guys in black socks or girlfriends on bikes, they all DO IT! My wife ran with me for about 50 yards at mile 25.5 on the run and this ref says " this is not a team event, I will disqualify you", come on I was heading for an 11:15 1st IM, while half half of Roth is on the canal pacing! Positives again are an excellent venue, you swim in a time appropiate wave, not age group wave so your not bashed up like other races. Beer flows, a McDonalds is 5 mins from the finish and chicks don't wear tops at the local lake. I'd go again for sure!

did it this year and want to do it again this year. Amazing race(although i can't compare it to other races,because this was my first IM distance race). Only those rattling noise making toys/things became a bit annoying after 10 hours (but that was probably also because my marathon didn't go that well).

Can some of you that have been to Roth offer some suggestions on accommodations? I would not have a vehicle so would need something close. Hopefully, clean and affordable. Thanks.

Anyone stayed in Nuremberg for this race it's a major city with airport, only 30km away or is there lots of places to stay in Roth?

if you want to stay in roth ,then book early.

I stayed in nurnberg this year. on saterday i went to roth by train. from there i biked to the swimstart to drop my bike. and i walked back from the swimstart to roth (which was a little bit further than i thought).

On sunday there is 1(maybe 2) train going early enough to get to roth in time. We took a taxi to the swimstart because the swimstart was to far to walk (you can get the numbers from the taxi companies on saterday).

so it's do-able (is this a word??), but i would rather stay in roth this year. If you stay in nurnberg and your taking a hotel near the railroad station, watch out that your room isn't next to the railroad. I couldn't sleep because of the noise.

why is that??

it's not a german vs non german thing...some marshalls enforce the rule, some don't...if every german had an escort there would be roughly 3000 people running/riding along the canal...
I know several germans that got warned for having an escort...as harshly as anyone else...including some pros.

btw...to answer paulo, besides the location, Roth matches Kona. No contest. It's a FAN-TAS-TIC race...there is nowhere on the course in Kona where you can feel what you feel going up solarer berg etc...simply amazing.

Bavarian_Frank, or any body else who has done Roth, since you live in Roth can you provide us some feedback on some accommodations in Roth. Everybody says book a place early but nobody has suggested any places to stay. I don't speak German so am unable to navigate German language web sites. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
