Anybody know about this race called "Embrun"?
On a training ride in Laguna Phuket I met a fine French man named Thierry. We discovered a shared interest in "Raids" and ultra-endurance events. He told me of a 130 mile (?) endurance run in the French Alps that takes about 40 hours to finish. Thierry had done it three times. He said it was called "Embrun" I think. Do any of you know where I can find out more about it?

You can find more info at xtri.com (http://www.xtri.com/search.asp?dfSearch=embrun&select=search.asp)... they had various articles on the race before.

The xtri.com article is about the Embrun triathlon. You might try ultrarunning.com for the Embrun run. I'll try some other sites and see if I can find it.

Hmmm, this Embrunman triathlon obviously sounds super cool. The event Thierry in Laguna Phuket was talking about was a running race though- like a "Raid" as the French refer to them. It was like Marathon des Sables but in the French Alps. You wore a pack and carried all your crap and basically just humped the whole thing. It sounded super cool and ass-kickin tough. I've done a lot of mountaineering so this would be right up my alley. I can't believe I am having difficulty finding out more about this event. They need better P.R.!

I had the opportunity to talk to Frank Hellendoorn a couple of weeks ago, and in passing he mentioned Embrunman and as you mention Tom, you have to be a "mountain goat" to do the race. I haven't scoped out the web site, but off the top of my head on one has broken 10 hours...........

One should focus their season around the race, and pray to the tri gods AND the mountain gods...wow, what a lot of variables

Personally.... I'm sticking to Roth.....though Embrunman does intruige me (damn!)

It is a great race:

But Tom asked about an Longdistance Run. That`s why I thought he might have misunderstood Embrun instat of Verdon.

Tom, you need to try the Mt. Everest Marathon relay, near Darjeeling India. It is a 5 Day 100 mile running stage race with day 3 (I believe) being a full marathon at elevation.

www.himalayan.com

This year's stage race just ended yesterday (nov 4th).

I'd really like to go do that event some year as my parents used to go vacation in Darjeeling in their youth during the 40's and 50's to escape the deadly heat in the plains of Northern India.

The event is actually reasonably priced, and you have full Sherpa support.

I did that race in '92. Finished in about 14 hours. Winning time was about 10:10, that year Pim Vandenbos won. IIRC the best bike split was over 6 hours.

I had a 39X26 and was fine with that. The first climb starts about 400m out of T1 and lasts about 14km. Then it goes downhill and back through Embrun. Then it pretty flat to the bottom of the Izoard. The Izoard climb is about 20km with the last 10 being in the hairpins. About 2.5km from the summit there is a slight downhill section of about 400m. Right after that your legs scream like hell. You top the Izoard 90km into the bike. The way back is all up or down and the last climb starts at about km 175. Instead of going straight downhill to the transition area you make a right for the last climb. The bike is about 188kms.

The run is nohing compared to the bike, but it's not flat either.

You'll find some pics of me in 92 here:

"130 mile (?) endurance run "

RUN. NOT TRIATHLON. As in NOT Embrunman Triathlon.

I repeat. NOT THE EMBRUNMAN TRIATHLON.

Sorry. Had to vent.

DragAttack got it and posted a link, but 120km would take well under 40 hours....

Not in Embrun, but 3-day ultra run in the Alps around the Mont Blanc. Could it be what you are looking for?
