The club needs to put on or sponsor a race a year. I'll look into the other requirements, our club director is at interbike right now. Keau

It doesn't take much, but it takes a good bit of effort to do it well. You need to consider things like the purpose of the team, bylaws, officers, etc. In fact, this is all it takes: http://www.usacycling.org/forms/clubapp.pdf

It's not necessary to sponsor a race. It's sponsor *or* pay the $50 or whatever the surcharge is to the USCF. It seems most clubs opted to pay the surcharge around here.

There are two types of teams (actually 4; the other two are collegiate (NCCA) and high school): sponsored and non-sponsored. A sponsored team is a USCF club that promotes an event during the year. A sponsored team is allowed to have sponsors. The implication is that riders of a non-sponsored team are not supposed to have any cool advertising on their uniforms. That's the only difference.

I just checked the 2005 rules and they may have dropped the requirement entirely but I may have missed it using the search function of Adobe Acrobat. There are only a few mentions of club rules in the USAC bylaws.

You can actually piggyback on an existing race. That is what we did. Another team put on a series of three TT's and 1 crit. We sent a few riders to help them with every race.

To become a sponsored club you can put on a competitive or a non-competitive event. The competitive event is a race. The non-competitive event can be a club ride or other event. For the non-competitive event you still need to fill out the USA Cycling forms and riders need to have a license or purchase a one-day license for the event. The advantage is it is much smaller than a race and the follow-up paper work is less. The USA Cycling web page has a list of the requirements.
