EndurRUN Stage Race - THE TOUR DE FRANCE OF RUNNING - Results and Report Stage 1-3
Quote | Reply
People. Please check out the following. I had the privilage of participating in the first three stages of the 2005 EndruRUN until a pre-existing injury forced my retirement from the event, and I can tell you it is the coolest race you will ever do. It is exceptionally well organized, and features well stocked aid stations every three kilometers throughout the event, pre- and post-race food, massage and ART therapists available post-race, and too many volunteers to count. I encourage all of you to visit www.endurrun.com for further details. Stay tuned for Stages 4-7!

STAGE 1 RESULTS
Sunday August 14, 2005

RIM Park, Waterloo Half Marathon

With the two-time defending champion sidelined due to injury, a new ENDURrun champion will be crowned in 2005! Eleven dedicated participants have accepted the challenge of running 7 Stages in 8 Days, totalling 160 KM. Good luck to everyone!

The cool and wet weather was a very welcome relief from the oppressive heat that we have experienced so far this summer.

Mike Strano paced himself to a comfortable Stage 1 victory and earned the honour of wearing the Gold Jersey for the next Stage. Tim Clarke ran an excellent race and now sits 2:13 behind Mike. Rounding out the top 3 was Steven Parke, who ran an incredible 4:47 faster than his Stage 1 of 2004.

The Female division is even tighter, with April Boultbee capturing the Gold Jersey by pushing to a 1:31:08 finish, followed closely by her sister Melanie. 3rd place went to Andrea Cobham who ran close to her personal best over this distance.

Congratulations are also extended to Adam, Julie, Dan, Gideon and Douglas for running with a true purpose and a common goal.

In the Relay, Kevin Beatty has given the Runners’ Choice Distance Dude’s a commanding lead after Stage 1.

Thanks to Simon, Rebecca and Maryanne for being Guest runners today, and experiencing Stage 1 of The ENDURrun.

I would also like to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of the dedicated volunteers committed to this event. Your countless hours of hard work have not gone unnoticed by the participants, which is the reason for doing this.

The generous sponsors make The ENDURrun a reality, and I sincerely appreciate their support. Thank you.

Congratulations to all participants in the 3rd Annual ENDURrun, and we hope you accomplish your personal goal.

Good luck in Stage 2 tomorrow, a 15 KM time trial.

STAGE 2 RESULTS
Monday August 15, 2005

Riverside Park, CAMBRIDGE
15 KM Time Trial

Stage 2 was a time trial, with runners starting 1 minute apart, in reverse order of finish from Stage 1. Mike Strano, wearing the Gold Jersey, started last. The relief of the cool weather of yesterday was brief, as the weather once again started to heat up. The 4 KM of trails would offer some welcomed shelter from the hot sun.

Time trials are not very common, which affected some of the participant’s strategies. Tim went out hard but Mike eventually started to close the one-minute stagger and felt comfortable with Tim in his sights over the last few kilometres. Similarly, Melanie closed the gap on her sister April’s overall lead by 9 seconds while running to a 3rd place overall finish today. Both Mike and April have retained the Gold jersey.

It is very interesting to observe the differing strategies among the participants. While some pushed harder yesterday and eased up today, others conserved their energy yesterday and ran harder today. And still others may be saving themselves for the difficult 30 KM trail run tomorrow! It is going to be exciting.

In the Relay, the Investors Group team closed the gap on the Runner’s Choice Distance Dude’s team by over 10 minutes due to the excellent run by Mike Archibald.

Special thanks to Guest runner Taya Johnston for taking part in this Stage of The ENDURrun. Excellent run!

Congratulations to all participants today. Back to back hard runs are difficult. Knowing what’s ahead of them tomorrow adds to the difficulty. But creates excitement for us! Good luck tomorrow.

STAGE 3 RESULTS
Tuesday August 16, 2005

Bechtel Park, WATERLOO
30 KM Trail Course

Distance and terrain were the new challenges faced by the participants in Stage 3. 30 KM of mostly trail running, after back to back road races the previous two days, would be physically demanding. The 6-loop format would also test their mental toughness, and concentration would be a necessity. The weather condition was hot, but not humid. There was also shade from the hot sun for half of the 30 KM distance while on the trails. An expertly flagged and marshalled course allowed the participants to focus entirely on their running.

Mike Strano has now opened up a commanding overall lead after capturing victory in this Stage. It was evident that Mike was conserving his energy to this point and used this Stage to break away. Congratulations Mike for retaining the Gold Jersey. Tim Clarke held on to a 2nd place finish against a late charge by Adam Johnston. April Boultbee also retained her Gold Jersey due to her fine performance today.

The Investors Group Relay team has now taken over the lead from the Runners’ Choice Distance Dudes and hold a commanding lead after 3 Stages.

Both Guest runners ran very well today. Thank you Bradley Cunningham and Tereza Macel for taking part.

The incredible perseverance of all of the participants could be witnessed as they passed by each loop. Each participant is on a personal journey and have personal goals, and it is inspiring to see. They should all be extremely proud of their accomplishments so far.

The continuity of care from Dearborn Health has been most appreciated. Thanks for caring!

The two difficult hilly Stages are up next. Good luck!

This sounds really fun for some reason. The distances seem manageable to those who do marathons and the canadian venue seems interesting...

Maybe next year I will convince the wife to run a SLowtwitch Hostel in our house. We are relatively close to all venues. I live right down the street from the one happening tonight!
