Cleat Position

Anyone have tips on cleat position and how to measure or find the ball of the foot and then transfer that to the sole of the shoe?

There is a decent article on it in the latest 220. Also some good stuff in Ed Burke's "High Tech Cycling."

What you are usually looking for is the second metatarsal head. Go back from your big toe. Feel the nub/bump on the side of your foot (should be about in the center of the ball of your foot). You can usually feel it through cycling shoes. I use a marker to then mark that position on the outside of the shoe. Most cleats have a line marking the center of the cleats. Line the two up, and **PRESTO**.

That will give you a good start. If you are (un)lucky enough to have cleats like on Speedplays with Q-factor adjustment, that requires more skill to figure out width. But try the method above. That is pretty standard. There are little nuances about moving the cleat forward or backwards depending on the kind of riding you will be doing (RAAM riders, for instance, often drill new holes in the shoes to get the cleat behind the ball of the foot, as this prevents hot spots), but that is probably more than you care to worry about now.
