That's true, but I find that the "race" situation will pull more out of you. If you are doing your own 20 minute tempo run, you can stop if you want. I had no problem doing these types of efforts on my own, but I suspect that some people, new people perhaps, have a difficulty doing a really hard 20 minute effort on an open road all on their own.

I don't know if I would drive an hopur and pay $30 bucks for a 5K, so I do see your point.

Because lack of understanding can breed ignorance. Amoung other things. :)
I just like to try and understand things and wrap my brain around certain areas of life that ellude me. I try and be as open minded as I can so I can learn.

Agreed. After this season, I plan on decimating the local 5 k race scene. Good thing we're different genders, don't want yer boy to see you whooped by a girl (just kiddin).... :P
