Race ready bike prep
I am new to triathlons and I have my first race in 6 weeks. I have had my Cervelo Dual since October and I like it. What should i do to the bike to get it ready for my race in 6 weeks? I lowered my handlebars about a month ago so that I have about a 4" drop. Should I replace the inner tubes? What about getting new tires for the race? I am getting a new saddle next week because my current saddle isn't comfortable anymore. What should I do in the next few weeks to have my bike race ready?

Thanks.

A good bike shop that offers a "race check" could do one. But you don't have to replace anything if not worn (very unlikely for a beginner with 5 months riding time ...) .

Just make sure that the bike fits, is clean, the chain lubricated and all screws checked. And you need to train fixing a flat - that's important.

If you have just one set of wheels, it is a good idea to have a pair of race tires.

Eric - I'm doing St. A's with Team in Training too. You should check with your TNT cycling coach - usually there is a local bike shop who is sponsoring the team - they sometimes give a seminar on changing a flat and will help you with your seat adjustment. Have you put two water bottle cages on your bike? St. A's can be very hot - especially if you are not used to the heat.

Here's my list:

1. Put race tires on. No need to replace tubes though. OR put on race wheels. This should be done 1 week prior to the race to be sure the tubes are not pinched, etc. and all is well.

2. Check and lube drivetrain. Adjust der if neccessary.

3. Check all bolts. Do NOT over tighten. Especially handlebars, stem and brake calipers

4. Check seat post (or beam in my case) too be sure it has not or will not slip.

5. Pump up tires the night before and re-check on race morning.

6. Be sure you have helmet, shoes, Championchip and sunglasses with the bike!

7. I'm old.....so hopefully I didn't forget something.

8. On race day....ride like you just stole something! : )

Don't pump up your tires until race day a.m. at St. Anthony's Eric. Bike check in is the day before and if you leave your tires pumped up all day in the sun, they might pop - you can hear the bangs of tires popping all day in the transition area. Its funny - unless its your bike.

I've done St Anthony's 3 times and never had a problem. Air pressure alone is probably not the cause. Combine air pressure with a bad tube or tire, a small piece of glass, etc and you'll have a blow out. I've done lots of Florida races with the bike in transition the day before and never had a problem, but then again I have either new tires or my race wheels (with nearly new tires) on the bike.
