Blackberry..what plan?
Oh ST'ers with all of your knowledge...I need your collective help! I need to get a Blackberry and service plan and wondered if anybody had any feedback on best plans? I have AT&T wireless mobile coverage and will most likely keep my phone separate for now. I see T-Mobile has a 29.99 unlimited plan, where as the Cingular (AT&T) plan is 49.99. Do you know what the difference is? Coverage maps? I might be moving to Maine, so the Portland metro area is important to me.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Kurt

Biggest issue (if applicable) is what does your network support. For instance, at my job, I don't think Verizon will work with our servers/network. Everyone uses ATT or T Mobile (but no one will use T Mobile for voice, as it's agreed the coverage is terrible. ATT has the best (most coveragenationwide) network, and in 2 short months, my voice contract expires with verizon, so I can consolidate, and get the 7100 (you WILL get tired of lugging a phone and BBerry around, so take that into account). FWIW, as of now, if you go with T Mobile, you can find deals that will give you a free 7100 - if you do want to combine everything.

You should look at the Sidekick II's as well, FYI.

I have T mobile, and use the blackberry as a cell phone too. Other people have said they have issues with coverage, but I have had none, and I travel a ton (albeit always in a major metropolitan area).

I use t-mobile for my Blackberry and Verizon for voice. I don't think the t-mobile network is as good as some of the others. For voice, I care that I can get calls anywhere I go, for e-mail, I can live with a couple of gaps. T-mobile was a lot cheaper than Verizon. Also, if you find a t-mobile corporate salesperson, they can give you a better deal on the hardware. It doesn't make any difference that you are a smaller operation, the corporate sales people are the way to go.
As far as having a separate phone and Blackberry, I think it is a better arrangment than having one unit. Not having the two combined allows me to have a smaller phone, and since I carry a phone when I ride or ski, smaller is better. I'd be a little nervous about carrying a Blackberry on rides.

Just have to go onto the t-mobile web site section for small business. There is a link to click on to get in touch with a salesperson.

I ran this a month ago. I switched from AT&T to T Mobile. I've no problems and even used it in Montreal without any problem. I got the new BB 7200 for free from a dealer on Arizona. I found it accidently online. I just had to sign up for a one year dea, with voice and data. It still costs me less than my old plan and I can do email if I want to.

You mentioned that you were going to keep your AT&T wireless phone. Most carriers except Verizon do not have a Blackberry plan that does not include the phone. Check out what each of the carriers is really going to charge you, and what services you actually get. We are doing a Blackberry pilot at work now and are testing most of the major carriers except for AT&T. As far as coverage goes, you'll have to decide based on where you feel it is most important to have coverage, as each of them probably has better and worse areas.
