OK maybe this will tie it into tri. They used to hold an Xtri in Half Moon Bay. The run course went along the coast and up the bluff in "Princeville by the Sea" (where Mavericks actually is located). I remember running past the famous surf spot but alas it was dead calm. You can clearly see the off shore reef that generates the monster waves. It is off a point and just a perfect spot for a northwest swell to build.

That was a cool race by the way...too bad they don't have it any more. Nothing like swimming in 55 degree water then climbing very steep coastal mountain trails followed by running past Mavericks. I remember it had the best post race meal ever...grilled fresh local Chinook (king salmon).
