I have done the Tupper Lake Half Ironman 9 times, and for 7 of them, I have camped right by the lake, 10 feet from the transition zone under the "no camping" sign. While the atmosphere is not quite like "Woodstock and Wildflower", the small tent city is tolerated by local authorities. The key is to make the set-up look like it is integral part of the other race related structures and to pitch your tent at dusk only.
