Without Limits was great.

Breaking Away was the first video I ever owned.

If you like Seabiscuit, rent "Phar Lap" but bring the kleenex.

Loved the fact that both Cutting Edge (DB Sweeney and Moira Kelley - "Toe Pick") and Blue Crush made people's lists.

My wife and I were the oldest people in the theater the day Blue Crush came out.

Varsity Blues has to make the list too.

'Endurance'

A Disney film about track star Haile Gebresellassie (sp?)

Simple and beautiful. I lived in E. Africa for 2 1/2 years, so that's part of why I like it so much.

I sense a theme here ... You left out Endless Summer, Big Wednesday, Slippery When Wet and all those great Bones Brigade videos ...

You guys hit all my favorites already. The only one I would add to the list is Mystery, Alaska. Great hockey movie.

At the risk of getting flambe`d, I'd also subtract Vision Quest.

How was Prefontaine? I saw Without limits and liked it. Is Prefontaine worth buying?

What, nobody liked The Hard Road? We must be living in the golden age of documentary film making. 3 I've seen (and enjoyed) lately--Hard Road, Dogtown/Z-Boys and Riding Giants. The common theme that really stood out to me is that the people featured in these films were willing to adopt an alternative lifestyle to follow their passions.

I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'

All the obvious great ones have already been listed. I would add Hidalgo and another wrestling movie much lesser known than Vision Quest called "Takedown". I would be pretty darn impressed if anybody else saw Takedown.

Prefontaine is apparently more accurate in some of the minor details that mega-Pre fans are into, but having seen them both (and owning Prefontaine) I have to say Without Limits is a much better movie, better acting, and more fun to watch. Even though Jared Leto looks more like Pre then Billy Crudup does.

As for my favorite sports movies:

The Sandlot

Any Given Sunday

Remember the Titans

The Road to Paris (The Nike DVD about Lance from ~2001)

A few not mentioned yet:
Tin Cup and White Men Can’t Jump (Ron Shelton was born to make great sports movies).
Personal Best (and not just for Mariel Hemmingway’s bisexual romps. This was Robert Townes first film and it has all of his usual intelligent script with great race footage and real athletes filling most roles.)

I'm surprised Cerveloguy hasn't started talking about "Youngblood" yet.

I was wondering around in Target yesterday looking for laundry detergent and noticed there is a new 2-DVD Special Edition of Chariots of Fire out, So I picked it up and forgot the detergent. They remastered the sound and restored the widescreen from th VHS version. It's mighty impressive I have to say and at the top of my list. Along with:

American Flyers

Prefontaine

Sportsnight TV Series DVDs -- close enough I say

Friday Night Lights was probably my fave of all time. Even though I'm not a football type of guy the movie itself was quite good.

it was amazing.

basically summed up most of my football career, and gave me a lot of things to think about.

there are a few others out there as well that are good...but that one is recent and i really enjoyed it.
