Use of Gels...

This feels like a stupid question but how do you all integrate gels (Hammer, Carb-Boom, Gu, etc. etc.) into your training. I was hungry before I swam tonight and grabbed a Hammer. I usually only use gels for race situations but I had a GREAT swim.

Your experience is appreciated..

No, that isn't a stupid question. It is a wise one actually.

I think it is very smart to utilize gels in exactly the way you did: Using them before a workout to help get through it. That is essentially what you are doing in a race.

Also, the wisdom in what you did is also that you are learning what does and does not work for you in training rather than on race day.

As for your specific question: How do you use them? Well, I would suggest exactly what you did is very good. If you are headed into a long workout then pop a gel at the beginning and have another ready 30-40 mintues into the workout along with some water. Basically, you are using them the way you would in an event.

Thanks for advice.
One thing I have learned during this entire experience is how much the implementation of proper supplements can add to performance.

I'm also a big fan of the post-workout whey protein shake...

anyone else?
