All this talk of accidents has me wondering on how long a helmet lasts? Given that it is probably the most important piece of equipment how often do people replace?

Every 18 months, although I believe they are supposed to be replaced annually.

As Julian said, 18 months is a good conservative guide. However, you would do well to read the helmet owner's manual carefully. It's amazing what's in there!
