Sorta OT, Sorta not
I am not much of a camera geek, but did get a nice camera (not point and shoot) as a wedding present, and took it with me to my last triathlon. The pictures came out horribly, as I was out of focus in every one. So either I was so exhausted I looked like an overweight out of focus quasi athlete, or the person behind the camera had no clue what was going on. She used the automatic focus and light thingy portions of it. Are there some manual settings she can put them on to insure that the pictures come out good?

It depends on the camera. Read the manual. Most "auto" modes that I've tried won't catch action shots. Some cameras have an "action" mode that will have a faster shutter speed (I hope I got that right). The manual settings will most likely get the job done, but you have to understand what they all do. You also need different settings depending on the amount of light.

So, read the manual and try again.
