KOPS, power, and road bike fit. Tom D.?

If one assumes that KOPS orientation is of dubious value, how does one determine proper fore/aft positioning? I have, I think, shorter femurs than average. My inseam is 34.5, my saddle height is approx. 30.5", and using KOPS my saddle nose is about 5.25cm behind the bottom bracket (on a road bike I'm riding an effective seat tube angle of ~74.5 degrees), which seems fairly far forward for a road bike setup.

It's winter, and I'm into experimenting. Any suggestions for nailing my fore/aft position? Is trial and error using wattage on the CompuTrainer the best approach, or is it less about power output (because perhaps it's not going to vary too much - I don't know) and more about overall positioning (bike handling, knee health, et cetera)?
