O/T, A Charlie Brown Christmas...

...is on T.V right now. Simply one of the best classic Christmas productions ever, and IMO, the most brilliant aspect of this cartoon is it's continuing relevance to the holiday season. Not only does it get me in the Christmas spirit, it reminds me of how ridiculous the ever increasing commercialism that surrounds this time of year. Give me the Charlie Brown tree anyday!

My family and circle of friends stopped celebrating the capitalist christmas a few years ago. For us, it is simply a time of year to be together and to reflect on how lucky we are. To that end, instead of giving each other a bunch of gifts none of us need, we adopt a needy family in the area, and put our resources together to ensure another family gets to experience a happy holiday season.

This year is truly awakening for us. We have a young single mother, with a 2yr old and a 6month old. She has asked for nothing for herself save some utensils for the kitchen. For her kids, the simplest of things, some winter clothing(jacket, pants, boots, snowsuit) and formula and maybe a play pen for the baby.

We live on the fringe of a fairly affluent neighbourhood, and it makes me sick when I see these spoiled kids jumping out of their parents Lexus SUV at the mall, and demanding the latest PS2, IPOD, Gameboy etc.

I like to take this time of year to remind myself of what is truly important. People to love, and who love you back. So long as I have that, I'm a fairly content man.

Happy Holidays everbody, and thanks for reading my ramblings.

This is also a holiday tradition of mine. Brings me back to my childhood and someday I hope my kids will enjoy this classic as well. Good post!
